Welcome Encouraging Communication and Language from Autistic Children and Others with Minimal Verbal Abilities workshop in Helsinki on June 6-7, 2024!
This two-day workshop will address challenges and solutions for those charged with providing communication, speech, and language services to children with minimal verbal abilities (i.e., those who communicate presymbolically or with emergent symbols including speech). Autism and Intellectual Disabilities will be emphasized with a focus on holistic solutions involving providers, families, and other stakeholders. Topics will include creating facilitative communicative environments, applying assessment and treatment solutions that work, unaided and aided AAC, team-based services, and educating stakeholders to participate in care. The workshop will focus on evidence-based solutions for attendees offered in an applied manner allowing participants to leave ready to offer new ideas for the children they serve.
Who is the workshop suitable for? For speech therapists, communication instructors, interpreters for the speech impaired, special education teachers and other communication and interaction professionals interested in the subject.

Educator is Billy Ogletree
Billy Ogletree is a speech therapist and professor of communication sciences and disorders at Western Carolina University (WCU) who has spent more than 30 years researching presymbolic and early symbolic communication disorders, as well as assistive and alternative communication (AAC). The challenges of rehabilitation and the surrounding environment are familiar to Billy Ogletree and he is e.g. edited Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Challenges and Solutions (2021). The two-day workshop specifically aims to offer solutions to challenges related to early stage communication.

We offer students a 30% discount. Prices include VAT 24%. To get the student price, when registering, mention that you are a student in the field of profession and tell the name of your subject organization/place of study.
Registration is binding. If the person is prevented from coming to the venue due to their own illness, a copy of the doctor’s certificate must be presented, in which case we will refund the participation fee. However, we charge €25 as office expenses. Alternatively, the participant can send from his place of business to another person. This must be notified in writing to the workshop organizer in advance. In this case, we do not charge an office fee.
